20th Century, Morfes Gallery, Melina Mercouri Art Space, Rethymno.

The exhibition presented three video works that search for human identity through the symbols and codes of its time.

In “20th Century” a person journeys through events of the 20th century to discover his identity. Along the way he discovers symbols and images from his past, always through the filter of the social groups that define and shape him. However many times he “walks” through history, he will discover something new: a symbol, an identity that will define him, and that keeps changing in an endless, circular course. The work is a loop of five different one-minute films; because the beginning and the end are the same, it becomes an endless circular projection.

In “Metamorphoses” twenty characteristic symbols of the century, religious, political, social and economic, turn rapidly one into another in an endless 20-second loop. Their metamorphoses refer to the shifting roles of symbols: changes brought about by the social and political conditions of the 20th century, which continue in our own day, perhaps even more often.

“ASCII – KID” relates to the ASCII Art movement, works made of letters and numbers, a continuation of teletype art and typewriter art. In the 5-minute video a small child wanders through the non-space of cyberspace, made of the only elements a computer “understands”: 0 and 1.
